ASEAN Smart City Project and Ecosystems

Within ASEAN, the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) aims to engage industry and global partners as they work towards sustainable development and creating livable communities.

As smart city solutions emerge and mature, the concept of society 5.0, a “human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space” has also become a near-future possibility.
This study examines the current state of smart digital cities development in ASEAN, with a focus on connectivity, transport & smart mobility and urban infrastructure.

Jakarta Smart City:
Sinar Mas Land BSD City

BSD City is exploring traffic management with AI and machine learning, featuring smart traffic lights responsive to traffic conditions.
Sinarmas Land through Bumi Serpong Damai (BSD), with Mitbana (joint-venture Mitsubishi and Surbana Jurong) will be jointly developing the first interconnected multi-modal transport complex in Greater Jakarta.
This new transit-oriented development (TOD) will offer access to multiple public transportation options, including road, rail, and park-and-ride facilities. Beyond transportation, the key idea is to address urban living needs.

IoT Smart City
Technologies

The connectivity and use of multiple technologies to augment the urban environment and services will greatly increase the quality of life for the residents.
Technologies applied are congruent with key technologies that enterprises across ASEAN industries are focused on in recent years, which include IoT, big data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Dtac has collaborated with PTT in a use case for 5G IoT in Wangchan Valley, Rayong along the EECi for smart video surveillance to support remote decision-making for the society

Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) Smart City Promotion

Supporting local needs, SMEs and start-ups across Thailand, depa provides incubators, sandboxes and training for smart city solution proposals, which will then receive incentives from the local governments to create the necessary digital and non-digital infrastructure.
depa works with the Ministry of Interior to promote smart city criteria to local cities. Each city has their own agenda.

An example of a start-up supported by depa is ViaBus, which provides real-time public transport bus tracking and navigation around Bangkok Metropolitan and various regions in Thailand through a mobile application.
